"Mind your tongue, Sandyman!" Sam said with a start, then flushed and slid back to sip at his black, bittered ale, "beggin' your pardon, but Master Frodo's as fine a sort as any. Old Mister Bilbo, too--before he went away--teaching me letters and those old stories of the Elves, sir!"
The miller took a gulp of his own brew and eyed Sam's demeanor. "And we'll see if any good comes of all that, young Gamgee." He chortled to himself and carried on talking with the merchant from Buckland while Sam sat quietly and watched the fire flicker in the hearth.
